Hello all

There is a new website for collect together model train track plans and layouts in all scales and sizes, designed with SCARM planning software:

Free Model Train Layouts & Track Plans

Most of the content in the site is created by SCARM users and sent to me by e-mail. Some of the layouts are already presented in SCARM blog, but there are new projects and more will come soon. At the moment, I am editing and uploading all stuff, but in the near future I plan to add support for user registrations, so everybody to be able to create an account and to upload projects in the site.

You can browse the projects in the site or search and filter the track plans by several criteria, such as “scale”, “size”, “trackage” and so on. In example, the following link will show you all railway layouts and plans in HO scale, listed in the site. Every project has its own page, where it is presented with more pictures, described with many parameters (such as minimum radius, maximum grade, suitable traffic, etc.) and sometimes explained by me or by its author. All (or almost all) published layouts will have corresponding SCARM files ready to be downloaded from the links at bottom in the layout’s page. There is also an option for each project to be rated with rating stars from 1 to 5 – the Rating panel is located below the description.

The site is well optimized for smartphones and tables, so you can browse it almost anywhere and anytime. However, some pictures may not look very detailed on small phone screens, but in overall you can get a good impression even from 320×480 resolution displays.

At the moment, there is no option for commenting below the layouts, but such feature may appear in the future. The site is now in beta state and needs to be used for some period in real environment to see how it performs, is it easy and useful, etc. So please, try it and comment here what do you think about it.

Hope you will like the site and will get many ideas from it even if you don’t use SCARM

Layout size ...

Would be nice if the Imperial (US) units were 'feet' instead of inches?

OK, Dave, I will consider

OK, Dave, I will consider adding of some option to toggle between inches and feet units in the site, as there are users who prefer to see track plan dimensions in inches like in SCARM 2D editor.

Any other thoughts and suggestions are welcome

The plans and layouts in the

The plans and layouts in the new site are growing and there are now over 20 projects listed

I am still not sure how to proceed with the imperial units - it seems that different of them are used among UK, US, Australia and may be somewhere else. Should I keep "inches" by default? Or "feets" are preferable? And what about the area - is it better to be displayed in square yards (as now) or in square feets? It is really difficult for me to decide as I am "metric" guy...

Measurements

I think you should show all of your measurements in Meters and in Feet, not Centimeters and Inches.

If the data is driven from a database, this can be done with a calculation. If the data is manually entered, you can just use google to make the calculations for you once.

The projects in the database are growing

Yes, the dimensions are stored in a database and calculations are easy. The problem is that there are too many ways to display them and different users have different preferences, so I will continue to search for the best way to show size and area of each layout.

Meanwhile, the track plans and layouts in the database are growing - now there are more than 40 projects of all scales and sizes. Here are the most searched categories so far:

HO gauge layouts & designs (all sizes)
N scale layouts & designs (all sizes)
Small size layouts & track plans (all gauges)

I hope that everybody will find something interesting and inspiring there

You need dim. in feet

Layouts look good.  But for US people you need to add feet.  That is the way we think.  Leave the inches.  It adds clarification.  In showing the feet - show like this - 4' x 2.8'.  Not 4.0' x 2.84'.   Do not show 0 if feet are even.  One place past the decimal only.

You are off to a good start.  Don't get discouraged.

New projects and dimensions in feet

Several more layout designs were added to the site in the last weeks. Here are two of them - one in HO and another in N scale.

The Layout Extension of Chris in HO scale

Nathan's Pass Railway Layout in N Scale

Both projects contains many new user-created objects such as various buildings, vehicles, rolling stock and more. I also added dimensions in feet, however, not sure how to display the part after decimal point... Should I keep it like now?

Loving the Granite Gorge and Northern....

...always wanted to build that when I was kid growing up but never had the finances. I read that trackplan book till it disintegrated. Brings back memories.

Hof Station

I want to see that Hof Station layout built!  I didn't count, but it looks like a fortune in turnouts!  It needs two more modules added, one to each end that would allow it to be used with those Free-moN layouts.  I think this is right up M.C.'s skill level.
