Mercedes Sprinter 312D

The Mercedes Sprinter 4×4 bridges the gap between vanlife and overlanding and is a great choice for those planning a long-term trip or living on the road full-time. The first-generation Sprinter or T1N is considered by many as one of the best and is often the choice for around-the-world trips. Today’s 1998 Mercedes Sprinter 312D 4×4 is no exception. This stunning rig finds a sweet spot between classic charm and modern refinement and, for the past 18 years, has been traveling the world. Despite its pristine condition, it has visited much of Europe, North America, Central and South America, the Middle East, Nepal, Australia, and much more. It’s refreshing to see a vehicle that’s not simply overland-ready but rather overland-proven. At present, the Sprinter shows 276,000 miles, but the engine and transmission have been replaced and have covered just 83,000 miles. In addition, it has undergone a mechanical overhaul and full bill of health via the specialists at KC Sprinters and is turnkey ready for another epic trip. Inside, you’ll find a tasteful and well-equipped interior built by the premium German overland vehicle builder and outfitter Action Mobil. In stock form, the Sprinter is already capable thanks to 4WD, low range, and a rear locker, but it’s worth noting that this platform has extensive aftermarket support and can be further uprated for backcountry applications.

From the Seller:

Hey, we run KC Sprinters here in Kansas City, Missouri. We’re a small Sprinter-specific garage. A couple of years back, I had the opportunity to buy this van and mechanically restore it. We finally did, and now it’s up for sale. Originally purchased in Austria and extensively traveled worldwide, this 1998 Sprinter 312D 4×4 is uniquely tailored for overland exploration and has the history to prove it. The original owners purchased this van new from Mercedes and immediately sent it to Action Mobil to be converted. They set off from there and lived in the van for 18 years. With the binder that goes with the van, I have an essay from the original owner. The end of that essay reads: ‘Until here, this story is only 451 words. But to tell you all our adventures, a million words would not be enough.’”

The Sprinter is fitted with a 2.9-liter turbo-diesel motor that delivers 122 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque and is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. A long-lived and relatively economical motor (owners report 25+ mpg on the highway) is matched with excellent all-terrain capability thanks to 4WD, low range, a locking rear differential, lifted suspension, underside protection, and more. Inside, these rugged credentials are balanced with a well-equipped interior with driver comforts that include:

  • Air-conditioning
  • Factory suspension captain chairs
  • Uprated Sony audio
  • Eberspacher cab heater
  • Power steering and locks
  • Phone mount
