James Blunt remembers his 'best friend' Carrie Fisher

British singer-songwriter James Blunt is reflecting on his unlikely friendship with Carrie Fisher — and revealed that he wrote a song about her death.

In a recent interview with the Guardian, the "You're Beautiful" singer reflected on his friendship with the Star Wars actress, whom he called his "best, best friend."

The singer explained he met Fisher at a restaurant in Notting Hill in 2003 with friends of the parents of director Dixie Chassay, whom he was dating at the time. "I sat beside [Fisher] at lunch," he explained. "I had just got a record deal and was moving to LA. Carrie's first question was: 'What do you do?' I said: 'I've left the army to go to make an album in LA.' Question number two was: 'Where are you going to live?' I said I didn't know. Her reply – the third thing she ever said to me – was: 'Well, you're going to live with me.'"

Blunt noted that he didn't see Fisher for the first month that they lived together, but he did see Debbie Reynolds, her mother. "[She] would shout: 'Hey Charlie – you wanna drink?'' and I'd say: 'No, I'm James, thanks very much,' then head to the studio," Blunt recalled.

The singer said that he saw more of the Postcards from the Edge writer after that first month. "I came home one night and sat on the end of her bed and we talked until morning," he said. "After that, whenever I got back from the studio I'd go into her room to talk, no matter if it was 11pm or 3am. She became my best, best friend."

Fisher had previously discussed her friendship with Blunt with Vanity Fair in 2014. After the interviewer asked if their relationship ever became sexual, the actress responded, "I became James's therapist. So it would have been unethical to sleep with my patient."

"He was a soldier," Fisher said of Blunt. "This boy has seen awful stuff. Every time James hears fireworks or anything like that, his heart beats faster, and he gets 'fight or flight.' You know, he comes from a long line of soldiers dating back to the 10th century. He would tell me these horrible stories. He was a captain, a reconnaissance soldier."

Fisher also said that Blunt "ended up using my bathroom a lot because it has a piano in there and the acoustics are good."

Blunt said that he wrote a song about visiting Fisher's house after she died in 2016. "I put my hand on her gate and started crying," Blunt recalled. "Moments after, one of the open-top Star Map vans that drive tourists around LA turned up. Over the PA, the guide said: 'On your left, you'll find the late, great Carrie Fisher's house … As you can see, some fans are still deeply moved by her passing.' That was me. I wanted to tell them to f--- off, but eventually found it funny."

The song, "Dark Thought," will appear on Blunt's album Who We Used to Be, set to release Friday. Blunt previously penned a tribute song to Fisher shortly after her death that was used in her memorial service.
