Phyllodes tumor of the breast Wide local excision plus Latissimus dorsi flap

Phyllodes tumor of the breast - Wide local excision + Latissimus dorsi flap

Phyllodes tumor of the breast develops due to overgrowth of the connective tissue in the breast. It is different from the more common breast cancer which develops in the glands. Typically presenting as a breast lump, some may grow rapidly and tend to stretch out the skin. Diagnosis is made by mammogram, ultrasound, and trucut biopsy. Most phyllodes tumors are benign (noncancerous), they grow slowly and do not spread to other organs. Few are borderline or malignant. Malignant phyllodes tumors grow rapidly and have a tendency to recur, Hence meticulous surgery with clear margins to remove the intact tumor is very important to decrease the local recurrence rate. In this patient, I removed the tumor with negative margins and reconstructed it using a flap from the back (latissimus dorsi) with excellent cosmetic results. Surgery is the mainstay of management, and adjuvant radiation and chemotherapy may be considered in individual cases.
