Eugene was named after his maternal grandfather, four time Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winning playwright Eugene O’Neill. O’Neill died a few months after Eugene’s birth, he turned against his daughter Oona over her marriage to Charlie Chaplin, he never met his Chaplin grandchildren then numbering five.

Petula Clark a very popular singer in Britain at the time recorded the theme to “A Countess from Hong Kong” (written by Charlie Chaplin’s for final film which he had a cameo role).
Titled “Love this is my love”. She was reluctant to sing it as she felt the lyrics were old-fashioned, she ended up singing in both French and English and it became a hit for her.
