Japan ex-PM Taro Aso to go to Taiwan, speak on security at forum

Will be ruling party's first vice president to visit since diplomatic ties cut in 1972

TOKYO -- Former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso will visit Taiwan for three days from Monday to deliver a speech on diplomacy and security at the invitation of Taipei. Negotiations are also underway to arrange a meeting between him and Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.

Aso will be the first vice president of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party to visit Taiwan since the 1972 break-off of diplomatic relations between Japan and Taiwan.
