Prince Mirwais Zahir, son of Afghanistan’s former king, dies at 66

Prince Mirwais Zahir, the son of Afghanistan’s former king, Mohammad Zahir Shah, passed away at the age of 66 in Kabul on Friday.

Prince Mirwais Zahir was born on January 25, 1957, in Kabul. He was the youngest of six children born to the late King Mohammad Zahir.

His education took place at Istiqlal High School in Kabul and Harrow School in Midsussex, UK. He pursued his passion for art at the Academia delle Belle Arti in Rome and further honed his skills by working and training alongside figures such as Italian sculptor Sinisca and French artist Jean-Pierre Velly.

Additionally, he maintained a friendship with the renowned Italian artist Luigi Ontani.

In the early 2000s, he held several government positions, serving as the special advisor to the Ministry of Information and Culture and as the chair of the Afghanistan Cultural Heritage Protection Commission.

Former President Hamid Karzai shared his condolences on social media, describing Shahzadeh Mirwais Zahir as a “patriotic, humble, and benevolent figure of the nation.”
